USAID/BHA’S VISIT TO FHI 360-SUPPORTED HEALTH FACILITY IN BORNO STATE, NIGERIA

On March 6, 2024, Sara Werth, Deputy Mission Director of USAID, and Patrick Robin, the Senior Humanitarian Advisor at the USAID’s Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance (USAID/BHA) in Nigeria conducted a pivotal visit to the FHI 360-supported Herwa Peace Primary Healthcare in the Bolori II ward of Maiduguri, Borno State. Northeast Nigeria. This visit emphasized the commitment of USAID to support and strengthen healthcare systems, particularly in regions with limited access to quality and affordable healthcare.

With support from USAID/BHA, FHI 360 is part of the MMC/Jere consortium project led by Save the Children. The project aims to ensure newly displaced households and vulnerable families have access to basic needs such as healthcare. FHI 360 supports two sectors-Health and WASH in health facilities on the MMC/JERE project across three government health facilities: Herwa Peace PHC, Baga Road PHC, and Goni Damgari PHC. The services provided include Outpatient, Accident/Emergency, Sexual/Reproductive Health plus family planning, Laboratory, Pharmaceuticals, Immunization, Community outreach including Integrated Community Case Management (iCCM), and referral services. FHI 360 also supplies potable water for patients and staff usage, sanitation facilities, waste management, and hygiene promotion in the three health facilities.

Furthermore, by working with the Borno State Ministry of Health, FHI 360 is providing health system support notably strengthening the health management information system and capacity upskilling of the Ministry of Health’s staff.  This collaboration aims to establish a sustainable system that will enhance the quality and effectiveness of the healthcare system in Maiduguri.

During the visit, FHI 360 technical staff including Doctors, Nurses, and Midwives, took the delegates through various sections of the health facility such as the triage area, consultation areas, and the sexual and reproductive health section. This allowed the USAID and BHA delegates to gain a comprehensive understanding of the services being supported by FHI 360. They were particularly impressed by the range and quality of health technical capacity that FHI 360 has provided to the Borno State Ministry of Health staff.

Since the commencement of the project in July 2022, FHI 360 has supported over 160,000 persons in need of healthcare services in the Bolori II ward of Maiduguri Metropolitan Council.
