Maximizing Options to Advance Informed Choice for HIV Prevention Project (MOSAIC) Convened a Stakeholders Workshop on 13th September 2023 to finalize plans for Youth Consultations to Inform National HIV Policy Review and HIV Prevention Programming in Nigeria
As part of MOSAIC’s commitment to expanding access to and choice for PrEP in Nigeria, the project provides technical support to the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) to update national guidelines and policies related to HIV prevention. Following several engagements with FMOH, there is ongoing discussions to update the National HIV Prevention, Care and Treatment guidelines and related policy documents based on recent global guidance and WHO recommendations. These documents will be updated to include new near-market biomedical HIV Prevention products.
Against this background, the MOSAIC team (working with selected stakeholders) will conduct Youth consultations using a mix of methods which includes an online and paper-based survey followed by group discussions with adolescents and young people, with priority for AGYW aged 15-29 years, to identify their needs and explore strategies to address those needs in the soon-to-be revised National HIV Guidelines and other HIV Prevention policy documents. This activity will identify the needs of AYP around current PrEP products available and the new products that will be included in the documents
The findings will be analyzed, and recommendations will be packaged and presented to the guideline and policy review committee(s) for consideration. Recommendations from this activity will also be shared with HIV Prevention implementers to inform programming for AYP.
To ensure the success and optimum impact of this activity, MOSAIC convened a one-day workshop on 13th September 2023 in Abuja with 24 participants representing select stakeholders including USAID, the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Implementers, Youth-led CSOs and Young People. The workshop featured plenary and break-out sessions during which the stakeholders reviewed and provided feedback/ recommendations on the activity approach, lower age limit for the target population, and survey questions. These inputs were used to finalize the Activity Implementation Plan, Roles/Responsibilities, and timeline for the Youth consultations.
