Advancing HIV Prevention in Nigeria; Paving the Way with PrEP Choice and Strengthened Service Delivery

Nigeria has made significant progress in reducing new HIV acquisitions through the scale-up of prevention programs. As the country prepares to embark on an implementation science study on long-acting injectable Cabotegravir (CAB-LA) for HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis PrEP, approved by the National Health Research Ethics Committee (NHREC), a strategic review of existing PrEP Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), job aids, and the creation of tailored Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials was critical to ensure effective service delivery, uptake and community awareness.

From November 11 to 15, 2024, the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), through the National HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, and STI Control Program (NASCP), collaborated with MOSAIC Nigeria and key HIV prevention stakeholders to organize a transformative 5-day workshop culminating in the development of a National PrEP Choice Implementation Pack. This initiative aimed to adapt and create resources that support PrEP delivery and empower users with the knowledge and information they need to effectively choose between available PrEP methods.

Bringing together 45 representatives from the FMOH, NACA, WHO, CHAI, Implementing Partners, CSOs, general and key population groups, the stakeholders successfully revised the Oral PrEP SOPs and updated job aids for healthcare providers. Additionally, Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials were adapted to address diverse target populations, ensuring cultural and contextual relevance.

The workshop resulted in the creation of 36 new IEC materials and job aids focused on oral PrEP and CAB-LA provision. These materials will undergo field testing at the Cabotegravir in Nigeria (CABiN) pilot facilities in January 2025. By leveraging MOSAIC tools such as the CATALYST Job Aids, CAB provider training guides, and the HIV Prevention Journey Tool, Nigeria continues to demonstrate its commitment to making choice for HIV prevention more accessible, effective, and user-friendly.

This collaborative effort not only reinforces the nation’s strides in HIV prevention but also marks a pivotal step toward the successful rollout of CAB-LA. Stay tuned for updates on the implementation science study and the impact of these resources as they are tested and deployed across Nigeria.
